Anixter Center is one of the largest nonprofit organizations in the Chicago area serving people with disabilities. With 35 programs at 34 different locations stretching from Chicago to Zion, Anixter Center helps more than 10,000 people with disabilities and related challenges each year. It is our volunteers who make it possible for us to help thousands of people every year. Without their dedication, enthusiasm and compassion, Anixter Center simply could not help as many children, teens and adults as we do. Our volunteers represent all ages and come from all cultures and backgrounds. Some volunteer for a specific project; others give several hours a week or a month. No matter what they do or how much time they donate, all help to make the lives of people with disabilities better.

Achieving Goals

At this point in her life, Paula is focused on two important goals–first, getting her GED and then getting a good job. She knows that not having a high school diploma is holding her back. So twice a week she meets with Lloyd, her volunteer literacy tutor at Anixter Center. Together they are tackling all subjects–English to Science–and taking lots of practice tests. Each test Paula passes takes her one step closer to achieving her goals.

Giving Back

After retiring from the business world, Lloyd was looking for a new challenge. He began tutoring at Anixter Center because he lived nearby and liked the idea of giving back. What he didn’t expect when he first started was that he would get so much more than he gives. Even though Lloyd has since moved farther away, he keeps coming twice a week to help Paula get her GED. It has become a goal they both share.

Jenner & Block Chairman Anton R. Valukas has volunteered as a tutor at Anixter Center for several years. In this video Anton speaks about the importance of giving back to the community and of his personal experience tutoring a young man at Anixter.

“I have witnessed the incredible contribution a volunteer can make to help an individual who has a disability in simple yet profound ways.  The amazing aspect is that they both evolve through this process in ways no one could begin to predict.” Amy Laboy, Director of Volunteer Services
